Review: Kose Sekkisei Lotion, A True Whitening Toner for Brighter Skin!

Remember I talked about Kose Sekkisei products in my review 2 years ago? Today, my focus will be on the Kose Sekkisei Lotion that I am still using to-date. A toner that, in my opinion, can truly brighten up your skin complexion!

I received Kose Sekkisei products from the brand 2 years ago. I remembered liking it very much, and that feeling doesn't fade even after 2 years, so I wanted to allocate a separate blog post just to talk about it, and how it changes my skin ever since.

Kose Sekkisei Lotion doesn't achieve it best-seller position easily. In the stat that Kose provides, this toner has sold roughly 50 million bottles since its inception in 1985. In this fast-changing world where consumers are constantly looking for new and innovative products, there must be a reason why people are still going back for it. The answer is simple, it works, and it works really well.

The Lotion itself is quite simple. It comes in a semi-opaque watery liquid with a strong alcohol scent. It leaves a refreshing and hydrating feeling on the skin when applied. It may tingle especially if you have sensitive skin. It is the old school type toner made of mainly alcohol and witch hazel extract.

Japanese calls their toner "lotion". For me, this is more like an astringent toner or cleansing toner. It is not a cleansing water, because it cannot practically remove makeup. You just apply and leave it on. The product will help to prep your skin and tighten your pores. The herbal ingredients inside can also help to even up your complexion! Its astringent properties also give its excellent sebum regulating benefits. I love using it in the afternoon where my skin sweats the most. It really helps to calm and cool my skin down a lot.

Having said that, this is meant for normal to oily skin types, especially those with large pores, excessive sebum production and dull skin.

Water, Alcohol, Glycerin, Angelica Acutiloba Root Extract, Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-Yuen Seed Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrhizate, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Melothria Heterophylla Root Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Citric Acid, Di-C12-15 Pareth-8 Phosphate, EThylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Polysorbate 80, Sodium Citrate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Triethylhexanoin, Ethylparaben, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Fragrance

INGREDIENTS ANALYSIS

The key herbal extract here is angelica root extract, job's tear extract, licorice root extract, and white lotus extract. I think anyone who uses Chinese skincare will be familiar with all these herbal extracts. Angelica acutiloba is often used as an anti-aging ingredient and as a moisturizer. It is the Japanese version of Chinese dang gui and is often used as tonic for gynecologic purposes. The rest are known for their skin brightening properties. The brand Naruko has a whole line of products made of job's tear. This ingredient is also super popular in Japan as skin toning, moisturizing and brightening superstar.

PERFORMANCE

there isn't much difference between the "enriched" version and “normal” version so you don't really have to get the enriched version unless you have dry skin and really want to try this toner out.

OK, I didn't take a before picture, so I couldn't take my after picture. But I found a awesome blogger who actually showed her before and after picture here. My result is less dramatic, but I can dare say that my skin is a lot more luminous, brighter (at least a tone up) and clearer after using this everyday.

Taiwanese girls like to use this as lotion mask. However, I would advise against doing that as the alcohol content here is still quite high. Maintaining a long skin contact with high alcohol content will make your skin more prone to inflammation and redness.

Apart from using it as a skin brightening toner, I also love to use this in afternoon as sebum regulating astringent. It helps to refine my skin texture and controls shine. My skin always feels so soft and smooth to touch afterwards.

CONCLUSION

If you ask me about a brightening toner that I would strongly recommend, then it has to be this. This is by far the ONLY toner that I can see clear skin brightening results. I love it, and will continue to repurchase in future.

Pros:
- refreshing and hydrating sensation
- effective at sebum regulating, toning and brightening
