Review: Krave Beauty Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser

There is a reason why Krave Beauty Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser suddenly become so popular all over the internet and Instagram. They are as popular as major brands like The Ordinary and Pixi! Many people are offering pre-order services for these lovely products so you can see the demand here in Malaysia! Of course, that is also mostly attributable to its founder, Liah Yoo, who is known for her work in advocating effective and minimal skincare practices. She has many videos that promote this concept. In a world where less is more now, sometimes we might want to ask ourselves, does quantity matter more than quality? Is a minimalist life (and skincare practice) more beneficial than having 10 steps routine every day?

Without further ado, let's go straight to my review!

I bought both the Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser and Kale-lalu-yAHA from Qoo10 (Sweet Coreas) the moment it became available. I love its minimalist packaging, concept and adorable ingredients. It makes me feel like I am feeding my skin with something freshly plucked and brewed. They are not cheap, the cleanser especially, so I am really hoping that Liah will ship to Malaysia soon to avoid third party handling (and charges)!

I started using the Match Hemp Hydrating Cleanser in early January 2018, and still have more than half left in the tube after three months now! And that's not because I use it very sparingly! I use it almost everyday even though I have three other cleanser lining up beside it. It shows how much I enjoy using it. I only use a tiny bit everytime (like a medium pearl size), and they are more than enough for my entire face. They feel too precious so I don't want to finish it that quick! Given how slow I am going through it, I think it can last me for about 6 months (turns out to be RM15/month), which means it is still more affordable than some of the cleansers I have before.

The Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser is a gel cleanser made of mainly matcha (40%!). It will lather into fine bubbles when adding water to it. It cleanses well despite the lack of bubbles. My skin feels fresh, clean and moist after cleansing. It doesn't strip like other foam cleansers. It is more moisturizing than Belif Creamy Moist Cleansing Foam, but the Belif one is better at deep cleansing. I also like Krave Beauty better than Kose Sekkisei Liquid Wash as it is gentler and the cleansing effect is more or less the same. Sometimes Kose feels a little bit stripping so I only use it at night.

Krave Beauty claims that this is an antioxidant cleanser that doesn't strip or affect your skin barrier while it cleanses. You can use it day and night. If you wear makeup, use a makeup remover before using this as this is not meant for makeup-removing.

INGREDIENTS ANALYSIS

This cleanser is made of mostly matcha powder (40%) based in green tea water. Other beneficial ingredients include sweet almond oil, hemp seed oil, oat extract, and panthenol. These are antioxidants rich botanical extracts with protective properties.

Matcha is one of my favourite food. I like anything matcha from matcha ice-cream, matcha dessert to matcha latte. It is also rich in antioxidant and is commonly consumed to cool and balance your bodily fluid (the yin and yang). Hemp seed is a popular food in most healthy diet. It is rich in amino acids, linoleic acid and healthy protein. Hemp seed oil has antibacterial property that helps to soothe and balance your skin. The addition of almond oil also provides a nice buffering effect for your skin to keep it moisturized and nourished while cleansing. It is also rich in essential fatty acids, vitamin A, B1, B2, B6 and E, and can help to relieve itchy and dry skin.

I also adore the cleansing agents used in this cleanser. There is coco-betaine (derived from coconut), coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside, as well as soapbark extract! These are gentler form of foaming and cleansing agents compared to SLS. They are also gentler and non-stripping compared to SLS and other surfactants on your skin. Soapbark extract is a naturally-derived cleansing agent normally used as cleansing agent for dandruff and flaky skin.

CosDNA analysis shows an overwhelming clean rating, with only one ingredient flagged as orange (i.e. butoxydiglycol, a solvent) and one flagged as potentially irritating (i.e. butylene glycol, a commonly used ingredient in 95% of the skincare items).

PERFORMANCE

I love this cleanser! I love it better than Belif Creamy Cleansing Foam Moist, Kose Sekkisei White Liquid Wash... you name it. It is now my holy grail cleanser! It is easy to tell whether or not you like a cleanser - by how likely you are to reach for it from the choices you have. It is gentle, non-stripping, and effective. Not to mention that it uses premium ingredients that I like to feed my skin with - sweet almond oil, hemp seed oil, matcha and so on. It doesn't have any scent but that gives you a good opportunity to enjoy the unique matcha scent inside the cleanser. It is so raw and authentic! Everything a vegen and organic lover would like! I even think it won't pollute when you wash it down the drain.

CONCLUSION

I agree with Liah Yoo that cleanser should not strip, and that natural skin barrier is the best moisturizer for your skin! I used to love cleansers that can deep cleanse without realizing the damages it might do to my skin barrier. We should treat our skin as gentle as possible. It can protect itself, you really don't need to feed it so many layers of products, take away its job and make it loses its ability to nourish and protect itself. I am going back to minimalist nowadays and I am glad that I found this Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser from Krave Beauty! I realize that I reach out for more stripping and more deep cleansing products less and less. My skin also can be self-sustainable (not producing any oil, and not feel tight) for longer when I don't apply anything. In the end, it means less bucks spent, less time wasted, and healthier skin gained... right?

Sometimes, less is more.
