Review: Biotherm Life Plankton Essence

The fragrance is one thing that lures me into Biotherm. I remembered walking around AEON Mid Valley one day and deliberately trying out new brands when I somehow bumped into Biotherm. I was hooked the moment I tried out the Life Plankton Essence on my hand. Not the texture, but the scent. It kept coming back to haunt me until I had to get my hand on one.

Well to be honest I was not really a fan of Biotherm Life Plankton Essence. I find it kinda sticky. But I know many people are raving about it, claiming that it has helped them achieved a fairer, smoother, and baby-soft skin. It is especially hot in Taiwan where girls are using it as lotion mask and rave about how it transforms their skin in just 8 days. Well I don't believe in 8 days miracle but I do want to try it out for myself and lets look at my findings below!

Biotherm Life Plankton Essence is packed in a beautiful gradient-indigo glass bottle. It looks like the colour of ocean where it gets darker the deeper it goes. There is some sediments in the bottom so you have to shake vigorously everytime you use it. Biotherm claims that those are the active ingredients - life plankton.

The essence is a slightly viscous liquid. It feels "hot" when the skin when you just apply and will leave a tacky or sticky finish. Definitely not something you would use at the first step of your skincare regime. I won't use this unless I use a highly refreshing and lightweight toner as "primer". Alternatively, I found that using it on a cotton pad makes it less sticky and more "applicable". It has a pleasant but strong cosmetic scent. It felt pleasant when I first used it, but the scent becomes overwhelming when I use it for longer.

Aqua, Glycerin, Maris Aqua, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, PPG-6-Decyltetradeceth-30, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Hydroxide, Vitis Vinifera Extract, Cellulose Acetate Butyrate, p-Anisic Acid, Adenosine, Ammonium Polyacryldimethyltauramide, Disodium EDTA, Caprylyl Glycol, Vitreoscilla Ferment, Xanthan Gum, Polyphosphoryl Choline Glycol Acrylate, Polyvinyl Alcohol, pHenoxyethanol, Linalool, Geraniol, Limonene, Citronellol, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate, Parfum

As you can see, there is a hefty amount of skin irritants here. I can forgive the different kinds of fragrance it uses, because Belif uses some of them too, and they didn't bother me. But I guess Biotherm just uses too much, and it somehow becomes too overpowering for me to handle! I also find the benzyl preservatives questionable since there is already phenoxyethanol in here. Normally anything with benzyl benzoate has higher chances of irritation for your skin.

Main ingredients are seawater, hyaluronic acid, grape extract, adenosine, and life plankton. Seawater, as discussed in Innisfree Jeju Lava Seawater Ampoule Skin, is normally rich in minerals and moisturizing factors to quench your skin of thirst and supply it with loads of nutrients. Biotherm uses water collected from hot spring hosted by the micro-organism life plankton with skin repairing and regenerative properties. It is also found to assist cells in better utilizing oxygen in vitro experiment. In short, life plankton is like yeast extract in many ways.

I started using this in 3 December 2017, and was half way through it after 3 months or so. On days that I don't use this, I will just use normal hydrating toner like the Innisfree Jeju Lava Seawater Ampoule Skin. I opened the Naruko Miracle Renewal Essence about a month ago, just to see the difference between the two.

After 3 months and so of using, I found my skin slightly firmer. My pores appear smaller, and something about it really smooths my skin surface. I don't see a difference in my skin tone, especially my freckles and dark spots. The changes are mostly in skin texture, where my skin feels and appears firmer and silkier.

Unfortunately, I can't call it "the One". It is a really beautiful little thing, with gorgeous packaging and nice scent, but the texture is a major turn-down. I don't like how it feels hot and sticky on my skin. The efficacy is still there. I can't deny that it helps my skin to look and feel neater and firmer, but I can achieve that with IOPE Bio-Essence and SK-II Facial Treatment Essence too, not necessarily must be this. As such, I am sad to announce my goodbye after I am done with it. I would recommend it for those who have no problem with the hot sensation and stickiness, and have rough and dry skin. But still...do patch test before buying to avoid any disappointment!

- gorgeous packaging
- helps to shrink my pores size and makes my skin firmer and smoother

- expensive
- unpleasant texture with hot and sticky finish
