Recommending 8 Sunscreen Alternatives for Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence

I was asked this question many times - what are the alternatives for Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence if I cannot get it in my countries (for whatever reasons), or if I happen to dislike its 2017 reformulation?

So in today's review, I have compiled a list of 8 sunscreen alternatives for those of you who love Biore sunscreen (its texture especially!) but cannot get it or use it for whatever reasons!

Here are the 8 sunscreens that I will mention below:

  • A'pieu Pure Block Aqua Sun Gel SPF50+ PA+++
  • Hada Labo Perfect UV Gel SPF50+ PA++++
  • Kiss Me Sunkiller Perfect Water Essence SPF50+ PA++++
  • Kose Sekkisei Sun Protect Essence Gel SPF50+/PA++++
  • Laneige Aqua Sun Screen SPF 35 PA++
  • L'Oreal Paris UV Perfect Aqua Essence SPF50 | PA++++
  • Make P:rem UV Defense Me Capsule Sun Gel SPF50+ PA+++
  • Missha Aqua Sun Gel SPF50+ / PA+++

A'pieu Pure Block Aqua Sun Gel SPF50+ PA+++

A'pieu is a lightweight, silicone-based sun gel that I find the closest to Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence. However, it is a failed dupe in my opinion as the product does not seem to get absorbed well when you use the required 1/4 tsp. In other words, you cannot really layer this due to its heavy and non-absorbing silicone content. However, definitely something worth checking out if you are looking for a Korean dupe for Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence!

Hada Labo Perfect UV Gel SPF50+ PA++++ | Review

This Hada Labo is a super lightweight, watery, fast-absorbing and cooling sun gel with excellent sun protecting ability. The consistency is similar to Biore but I find this one applies better and feels less silicony on the skin. It is a sunscreen with hydrating essence properties that I enjoy! The only cons is that this is generally about 1.5x more expensive than Biore.

Kiss Me Sunkiller Perfect Water Essence SPF50+ PA++++ | Review

This is an alcohol-free version of the Biore Watery Essence. It feels equally lightweight, slightly silicone and moisturizing on the skin. It also offers equally excellent sun protection. My only problem with this sunscreen is its scent. The scent gives me headache for some reason hence I would not repurchase, but if it doesn't bother you, then this will be an excellent alcohol-free alternative for Biore!

Kose Sekkisei Sun Protect Essence Gel SPF50+/PA++++

This is similar to Biore in the sense that it is also gel-like and fast-absorbing. But I like this Kose one better since it contains herbal extracts with skin brightening properties. The price is also not too expensive as it is only RM98/81ml for a branded sunscreen like this, considering that Biore is RM30/50ml and normal sunscreen is about RM50/50ml.

Laneige Aqua Sun Screen SPF 35 PA++

This Laneige sunscreen offers similar lightweight sun care experience to Biore, and do it even better. In fact, this feels exactly like Laneige Water Bank Essence in my opinion. It is super lightweight, refreshing, fast-absorbing and non-sticky. It is like a very light sun gel that doesn't feel silicony at all. The cons is of course the price that makes it about 3 to 4 times pricier than Biore!

L'Oreal Paris UV Perfect Aqua Essence SPF50 | PA++++

L'Oreal Paris super aqua essence, as the name suggested, is a lightweight and moisturizing essence with sun protecting ability. I include it here because it is super lightweight with high UVA protection. The consistency is similar to Biore but this one is milder with less alcohol content. It feels like a very light cream actually so I really like it. The downside is again the price, which is about 3x more expensive than Biore.

Make P:rem UV Defense Me Capsule Sun Gel SPF50+ PA+++

This is an avobenzone sun gel with encapsulated essences suspended in a clear gel. It is silicone-based like Biore, but gets absorbed faster. It also uses less alcohol than Biore. Although the appearance and texture looks different, but this is the closest I can get to Biore in my opinion in term of application and finish.

Missha Aqua Sun Gel SPF50+ / PA+++

This is similar to Laneige Sun Gel, which is super lightweight and non-sticky when applied. It feels like a moisturizing essence more so than sunscreen hence I really enjoy using this. Definitely a great alternative for someone who enjoys lightweight sunscreen!

CONCLUSION

Biore is so popular because it is super lightweight, fast-absorbing, refreshing with SPF50+ and PA+++(+). And it is cheap. It usually costs around RM30 (<US$10) in most places. Sometimes you can even get it at RM20 at sales. It is hard to get a perfect alternative but since the world operates around give and take, I found a few that are worth considering.

A'pieu is lightweight, cheap but not very fast absorbing. Silicone-based.

Hada Labo is lightweight, refreshing, moisturizing, and fast-absorbing. Non-silicone-based. About twice pricier.

Kiss Me is lightweight, cheap, moisturizing with weird smell. Silicone-based.

Kose Sekkisei is lightweight, refreshing, moisturizing, and fast-absorbing. Contains skin brightening herbal extracts. About twice pricier.

Laneige is lightweight, moisturizing, fast-absorbing. But offers low sun protection. Expensive.

L'Oreal Paris is lightweight, moisturizing, and fast-absorbing. Expensive.

Make P:rem is lightweight, moisturizing and fast-absorbing. Silicone-based. Slightly pricier.

Missha is lightweight, moisturizing, refreshing and fast-absorbing. Essence-like. Slightly pricier.

I hope you like my share today! Good luck choosing your favourite!
