Review: Laneige Fresh Calming Morning Mask and Toner

I am quite excited when Laneige launched the Fresh Calming line! It is actually a new skincare line designed for combination to oily skin as well as younger skin. We have many products focusing on moisturizing in Laneige but rarely do we come across those that targets young adults. These Fresh Calming orange babes are meant for those in their 20-25 with combination and dehydrated skin!

From the line, I picked the Morning Mask and Toner. I am interested to try out the Gel Cleanser too but... you know... I have a lot of products to go and I don't want to keep too much one a cleanser as well.

Let's take a look at the both of our Fresh Calming babes:-

Laneige Fresh Calming Morning Mask

Laneige Fresh Calming Morning Mask comes in a beautiful and vibrant pinkish orange aerosol can with a pump top. It looks simple and cute!

The mask comes in the form of moist, bouncy bubbles that will turn watery once you smooth it all over your skin. You can hear little sizzling sound when the gas inside escaping as you massage it on. The skin is left plump, soft and smooth once the product is fully absorbed.

HOW TO USE

You can be creative in term of the ways of using this. You can use it as a moisturizer, makeup gripper, freshener, or calming pack as and when needed.

I like to use it as a lightweight moisturizer or "sunscreen gripper" in the morning. It is super lightweight and it will make my morning routine much easier and quicker. I sometimes use this in the afternoon to soothe and calm any redness and irritated caused by moisture loss or temperature rise. I enjoy how this manages to cool and soften my skin afterward.

INGREDIENTS

Water, Propanediol, Glycerin, Squalane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Sea Water, Litchi Chinensis Pericarp Extract, Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Dimethiconol, Cyclohexasiloxane, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Silica, Panthenol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium Edta, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

INGREDIENTS ANALYSIS

The product has a simple ingredients that look quite "safe" on CosDNA. A few items flagged 1/9 on acne-triggering are pretty commonly seen skincare ingredients such as squalane and butylene glycol. Carbomer is a potentially irritating ingredient but it is added in a small amount so I think it is not an issue here. Overall I am pleased with the ingredients.

Notable ingredients include squalane, sea water, lychee extract, and panthenol. The rest are mainly emollients, viscosity controls, and so on that makeup the texture of the product. The key player here is lychee extract, a delicious and pretty-looking fruit rich in antioxidants. It is shown to have antioxidizing benefits and protecting effect against oxidative stress caused by UV rays. It can reduce the release of MMP-1 after UVA and UVB irradiation, thus mitigating collagen loss and pigmentation caused by sun exposure. A Japanese research also shows that lychee offers up to 24 hours moisture protection. Others are mostly moisturizing ingredients include squalane, sea water, and panthenol. They are the heroes that help to bind moisture to your skin and reduce any irritation, complications and sebum overproduction caused by moisture loss. I also love having sea water here. You guys know I love Innisfree's Jeju Lava Seawater Essence. This is an ingredient with high content of sodium or magnesium salts and can help to slow down cell proliferation in the skin and calm the skin. It is the living water that you need to revitalize your skin!

PERFORMANCE

This is my first time using a morning mask, but it is not a ride or die. I bought this because I am a product junkee and I love trying out new things. This morning mask is essentially a lightweight moisturizer that will help your makeup to stay longer and better. It is super moisturizing yet very lightweight. This is not technically a "mask" but more like a "makeup primer" that you don't have to wash off. My skin is also a lot softer, smoother, moist, and cooler after the application. In short, I really enjoy using this in the morning and I think it will be great for those with combination/oily, dehydrated, and sensitive skin.

Next, let's look at the toner (50ml) that I bought from Hermo earlier:

Laneige Fresh Calming Toner

This stuff is a love at first sight the moment I splash it on my face. It is so refreshing, watery and hydrating. It has a fresh fruity scent to it that my nose likes.

The toner comes in the form of plain liquid. It is just like water but many times lighter. It leaves my skin feeling hydrated, cool, balanced, and fresh after using. My skin feels toned (a bit tight) as well so I am assuming that this can function as an astringent too. I think it will work great for combination to oily skin and it is gentle enough for sensitive skin who cannot tolerate alcohol-infused toner.

HOW TO USE

Normally I use this right after cleansing to hydrate, balance and prep the skin. However, I sometimes also pour some on a cotton pad and use it as 3-5 minutes lotion mask to calm and deeply hydrate my skin.

INGREDIENTS

Water, Propanediol, Sea Water, Litchi Chinensis Pericarp Extract, Butylene Glycol, PPG-13-Decyltetradeceth-24, Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

INGREDIENTS ANALYSIS

This toner is much simpler than the mask. Its main ingredients remain propanediol, sea water, and lychee extract. Despite its lightweight texture and astringent properties, there is no alcohol in this toner, which is great for sensitive skin. The propanediol is added to give this toner its lightweight and ultra refreshing consistency. The ingredients altogether offer a nice soothing, anti-oxidizing and hydrating effects for the skin.

PERFORMANCE

This toner does what an astringent toner is expected to do, but much more. It can prep, tone, balance and hydrate my skin. It is so hydrating in the sense that I don't think a specific moisturizing serum to keep my skin moisturized after applying this. As if the deepest layer of my skin is been quenched of thirst.

CONCLUSION

I like both products. I think they are both great at prepping, balancing, and toning your skin. They are also quite gentle and hydrating at the same time. Young girls, those who always find their skin in grease, or those who want lightweight moisture should definitely give this a go! But for drier skin like mine, I don't think these are a must as they can't really do much for your skin except for offering some cooling and hydrating sensation though.

I am not sure will I repurchase because new things keep coming up. I am sure Laneige would have come up with something once I finished these Fresh Calming babes. Besides, my skin is on the drier side so these fresh calming babes are not really my cup of tea. I love the texture of the Fresh Calming Toner but I think it is highly similar to Kose Sekkisei Lotion with skin whitening benefit so I might just get the Kose one instead.

Would strongly recommend them for combination-to-oily, sensitive and dehydrated skin.

Overall impression: ★★★★☆ (toner) ★★★★ (morning mask)
Repurchasing: ★★★☆ (toner) ★★★ (morning mask)
