Comparison Review: Belif First Aid Transforming Peel-Off Mask vs. Mild and Effective Facial Scrub

I think it is quite clear that Belif is a soothing and skin repairing skincare brand using only natural herbal ingredients. Since it is so gentle, its exfoliating lines, both the more chemical "peel-off mask" and the physical "mild and effective scrub" are kinda obsolete in my opinion. Too gentle to be effective, I think.

There are two different types of exfoliators in Belif. One is the First Aid Transforming Peel-Off Mask using natural AHA ingredients whereas the other one is the Mild and Effective Facial Scrub using very refine scrubbing particles. Both are designed for sensitive and dull skin.

Let's take a look at the Belif First Aid Transforming Peel-Off  Mask.

This is a high-maintenance product in my opinion. Each jar contains 50ml but you will need roughly 5ml per application so this product will last you less than 10 uses. If you consider Cosrx AHA White Head Power Liquid which can last you for a few months even if you use it everyday, then this Belif peel-off mask is definitely on the pricey side.

Belif claims that this is a gentle exfoliating mask that will leave the skin clearer, moisturized and more refined after each use. It is suitable for dry, dehydrated, dull, and rough skin. The unique thing about this peel-off mask is that it will turn into a thin gel upon contact with water for gentle removal of the mask. You don't have to peel or rub it off, it will just melt away naturally when you rinse your face with water.

The ingredients may look complicated but is actually quite simple. It is made of two Napiers formulas, the Original Formula and DTX Formula (detoxification). The Original Formula is very common and presents in literally every single Belif products. Their main functions are to soothe, protect and moisturize the skin.

DTX Formula is less commonly seen in other Belif products and is the reason why you purchase this mask. It is consisted of arnica flower extract, wild yam root extract, cleavers extract, lemon balm extract, and rose extract. Willow bark extract, a natural BHA with anti-inflammatory property is also added to complement the efficacy of the DTX Formula.

Arnica flower extract is a fragranced skin conditioner with anti-inflammatory and smoothing benefits. It can enhance the appearance of the skin and restore suppleness to the skin, and is especially effective for dry and flaky skin. Mountain yam root extract is a skin brightening, anti-oxidizing and moisturizing ingredient. It is often made into Asian dishes and used as a tonic in Asian culture. It can be used to fight signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines. The diosgenin component inside can also reduce hyperpigmentation on your skin including freckles and old scars. Its rich saponin content is also effective to soothe and calm sensitive and inflamed skin. Cleavers, or goosegrass are astringent that can minimize the appearance of pores and firm up the skin. Lemon balm, a potent antioxidant, is added to provide anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It can calm sensitivity arisen from skin damages and exfoliation. Rose, in addition to its skin moisturizing property, can also offer ample protection against environmental aggressors. All these are great complements to the willow bark extract, as they can repair damages while supply loads of nutrients, during and after the exfoliating process.

If you are curious, the unique consistency of this mask has nothing to do with its willow bark or any other DTX formula. Its high solubility is mostly attributable to the use of polyurethane-34 and probably even silica (not sure how the chemical works here), and the sole purpose is to make this mask less abrasive and easier to be removed without stimulating the skin too much.

Before we move on to the performance part, let us first take a look at the Mild and Effective Facial Scrub.

I bought the Mild and Effective Facial Scrub at Belif KLCC grand opening. They were running a first 5 customers to get the Aqua Bomb promotion but unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to be the first 5. Anyhow, back to this Scrub, it is actually an award-winning gommage peel for drier and sensitive skin.

The texture of this scrub, as you can see, is really refined. It definitely looks like one of those gommage peels out there, but many times gentler and finer than those. You won't feel a thing, especially if you don't have sensitive skin. The cellulose is too gentle to make an impact on your skin. It feels more like a thicker emulsion, or natural juice with fibers in it.

Water, Cellulose, Alcohol Denat., Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, *Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, *Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, *Nepeta Cataria Extract, *Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Leaf Extract, *Baptisia Tinctoria Root Extract, *Stellaria Media (Chickweed) Extract, **Arnica Montana Flower Extract**Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) Root Extract, **Galium Aparine Extract, **Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, **Rosa Damascena Flower Extract, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Lygodium Japonicum Spore, Ceteareth-20, Tromethamine, Carbomer, Polyethylene, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Trisodium EDTA, ***Fragrance, Limonene

*Napiers Original Formula
**Napiers Formula DTX
***Fragrances of natural origin

The ingredients are more or less the same as the First Aid Transforming Peel-Off Mask, except that this is made of mainly cellulose instead of polyurethane-34. The two ingredients highlighted in green are uniquely the Mild and Effective Facial Scrub. They are fern extract and roselle flower extract. I think most of us are familiar with fern and roselle, which are both plants. Fern possesses ample protective properties against sun damage and inflammation whereas roselle can improve the elasticity of the skin.

If you include all those amazing DTX ingredients we discussed in the peel-off mask, then this scrub is indeed a very gentle and mild scrub with skin soothing and repairing properties. No harsh ingredient involved. And I won't be worried about the alcohol in here as it is usually used as a solvent for all the herbal ingredients here that are sometimes undissolved in water.

Both scrubs or exfoliators do not do much for my skin. I would call them obsolete. My skin isn't visibly brighter, pores become smaller, or that my complexion appears smoother after using them. The scrub is too mild, even milder than Primera Mild Peeling Gel, to convince me that it is a scrub. And the peel-off mask is again super mild. And I don't like how it takes a long time to get dried (15-20 minutes) and my skin doesn't look any difference than it was 20 minutes ago after washing it off.

Having said all these, I will not repurchase both scrubs. However, I don't think Belif fans should just turn their backs at these products. I think they are both well-made products, using great ingredients, but are only suitable for sensitive skin. The Mild and Effective Facial Scrub will work best for dry and sensitive skin whereas the Peel-Off Mask will be good for those with oily, acne-prone, combination and sensitive skin. Normal and resistance skin is not advised to waste their money on these two, and given that these two are not cheap either.
