Review: Goodal Moisture Barrier Liquid, Eye Cream and Cream

Today, I want to talk about Goodal Moisture Barrier Travel Kit that I bought from Gmarket a few months ago. Inside, there is Goodal Moisture Barrier Liquid (23ml), Moisture Barrier Cream (10ml) and Moisture Barrier Eye Cream (5ml), literally everything I wanted to try from the Goodal Moisture Barrier line. It is always good to have travel kit like these so that you can try before buying to avoid getting the wrong products for your skin. This kit is also available at CLIO Club for $25.

Beauty from the Deep: An Overview of 10 Biotherm Products

Biotherm used to be one of the higher-end cosmetic brands that I thought I will only start venturing into in my 30s. I guess I won't be interested in the brand if not for the Life Plankton Essence, which is their closest resemblance to SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. I am obsessed with anything treatment essence so I knew I had to give it a try somehow. And that's how I start picking up a lot of Biotherm products.

Biotherm is a French high-end cosmetic company owned by the L'Oreal Group. It was founded in 1952 by Jeanine Marissal and acquired by L'Oreal in 1970. Unlike a lot of French cosmetics which focus on organic and plant-based ingredients, Biotherm is inspired by the miracle power of mineral water. Women in the Middle Ages tend to bath themselves in spring water as they found that it will make their skin softer, younger-looking and smoother. Gallo-Roman warriors are also believed to bath themselves in the spring water of French Pyrenees after battles to promote wound-healing. The mythical power of spring water is taken to a new level when scientist Dr. Jos Jullien discovered a substance called life plankton on the surface of the baths. He subsequently met young cosmetician Jeanine Marissal and together they found the enormous potential of life plankton as a skincare ingredient, of which Biotherm is born.

In Malaysia, Biotherm is a high-end brand only located in selected SASA outlets and departmental stores. They rarely do promotional activities or discounts, so you normally won't find a lot of customers clouding around Biotherm. But if you do pick up one or two of their products, you'll be deeply attracted by its fragrance (overpowering fragrance, so you either love it or just get turned off immediately) and beautiful packaging. But skincare is not meant for decoration, so in this review, I will look into the efficacy of each Biotherm product I use in the past few months and comment on their performance as a skincare ingredient.

Comparison Review: The Difference between Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence and its Rose Edition

I have received several emails asking about the difference between the normal Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF50+ PA++++ and the limited rose edition, so I decided to write a separate post explaining their differences for those of you who are indecisive between which to buy.

First Impression Review: Kiehl's Newly Launched Clearly Corrective Brightening and Smoothing Moisture Treatment, Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil and Pure Vitality Skin Renewing Cream

Kiehl's recently came out with a lot of new products. All of them were pretty exciting with interesting functions and delicious-looking ingredients! Out of sheer curiosity, I quickly went to their Mid Valley outlets and claimed these samples. By the way, Mid Valley now requires that you key in your ID in order to claim these samples. Each customer is only entitled to two samples for each product. I am not sure why they change their regulations but I guess overwhelming samples request and bad currency performance might be the reasons.

Today, I will talk briefly about each product, their respective skincare purposes and ingredients used.

Exfoliation 201: Chemical Exfoliation, AHA and BHA

Chemical exfoliation is a new thing for me. In fact, most Asian women only rely on scrub and deep-cleansing mask to exfoliate their skin. All of my friends that I spoke to were clueless about chemical exfoliation. And they were extremely concerned about putting acids on their skin, since acids are normally associated with skin damage. But after researching further, I found that acids can be your good friends for a younger and brighter looking complexion if it is used correctly. I hope that this article will give you a general idea about chemical exfoliation and perhaps even encourage you to jump on the bandwagon of acid treatment.

As we have discussed in Exfoliation 101, exfoliation is the key to brighter, smoother and younger-looking skin. But physical exfoliants like scrub and gommage peel are inappropriate for daily uses. Hence, our smart beauticians bring us this new innovation called chemical exfoliants. Chemical exfoliation, most commonly present itself in the forms of AHA and BHA, is the use of mild acids to clear up the buildup of dead skin cells on your skin surface and within your pores. If done properly, chemical exfoliation also carries long-term skin benefits to reduce hyperpigmentation, breakouts, wrinkles, and pores size. You can read this article to find out more about the science behind chemical exfoliation.

Exfoliation 101: Introducing the Concept of Exfoliation and An Overview of Gommage Peel and Facial Scrub I Used

It is pretty normal to assume that if you drink a lot of water, you will need to go to the washroom often. This is due to a process called metabolism. The same goes for our skin, which often needs to replace itself from time to time to get rid of biological waste. For our skin, biological waste normally comes in the form of dead skin cells, which either gets stuck to the skin surface or is trapped within the pores. If our body is fit and healthy, these dead skin cells will be eliminated from our body naturally. However, if we are undergoing a lot of stress or health issues, our metabolism will be disrupted leading to the accumulation of biological waste. These in turn might result in a duller, uneven, spotty and flaky looking complexion.

This is when exfoliation comes into rescue by aiding the elimination of dead skin cells that are remained on our skin. Normally, we use a scrub for surface unevenness and roughness and a deep-cleansing mask for anything below the surface. Scrub is also more suitable for normal to drier skin whereas deep-cleansing mask works better for combination to oilier skin.

Recently, there has been a rising emphasis on chemical exfoliants, which are AHA, BHA and PHA. I got to know these ingredients when I was researching about Cosrx products. AHA is the acid treatment alternative to scrub. AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acids and normally comes in the form of glycolic acid, mandelic acid and lactic acid. It works to loosen the bonds of the dead skin cells allowing it to be better eliminated from the body. AHA is photosensitive hence it is imperative that you use a sunscreen whenever you are using AHA. My bf who accidentally lays my Cosrx AHA Whitehead 7 Power Liquid on his face suffers massive redness and sun burn when he went under the sun unprotected the next day. You won’t want that to happen to you!

PHA is relatively new to the industry. I know Cosrx just invented a new cream with PHA and has been giving out samples to the public. And Make P:rem Radiance Peeling Overnight Mask I just bought also contains this ingredient. Basically, PHA (Polyhydroxy Acid) is very similar to AHA without the harshness of AHA. It is much more hydrating than AHA and will suit those with dry and sensitive skin.

BHA, on the other hand, is the acid treatment alternative to deep-cleansing mask. It is oil-soluble so it can penetrate deep into your skin to unclog your pores, cleaning up everything that has been built and growing inside. It also has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to calm and soothe your skin. These properties make it a wonderful ingredient for those with oily, combination and acne-prone skin.

Part 1: Physical Exfoliation, Scrub and Gommage Peel

Scrub is the most common way of exfoliating your skin. We call this physical exfoliation because it involves using physical scrub to force peel dead skin cells on your skin, encouraging it to renew and regenerate itself in a faster way. My mom used to tell me that I must scrub at least once or twice a week. She did not explain why but she insisted that “scrubbing is very important” to make your skin look baby-soft. Well, is it true? Not necessary. It is highly depend on the types of scrub you use, how harsh it is and also your skin types. Normal to dry skin can use a harsher scrub but oilier to sensitive skin should opt for milder gommage gel or other forms of exfoliation like clay mask or chemical exfoliants.

Gommage gel is a much mild alternative to scrubbing, and is suitable for sensitive skin. It contains non-abrasive enzymes and extracts to slough off dead skin cells via manual massaging. You will see your skin “peeled off” in the form of plastic gel balls which are actually just the gommage peel itself. It is still a form of physical scrub, but much gentler than that.

There are couples of scrub or gommage peel that I have used in the past few years, some of which I have not reviewed on so I want to talk about all of them in this mega post, starting from the oldest to the newest.

Review: Belif Moisturizing and Firming Eye Cream

Actually, I was a bit unsure which one I should go for at first, this or the Belif Peat Miracle Revital Eye Cream. This one is loved and raved by one of my favourite vloggers Meejmuse. It also has lighter and bouncier texture. But Peat Miracle one claims to reduce fine lines. I need to decide which one I want to get first because apparently I cannot buy both at the same time due to budgetary concern. Then I ended up with this having went to Belif store and trying it on my hand and face numerous times. I also claimed a sample of each of them to try it out at home. I find this more moisturizing, bouncier, and works better for my under-eye fine lines. Having used it for almost a year now, I am ready to talk about this in details!

You can also refer to my shorter review on this product here if you don't feel like reading the full review.

Review: Yves Rocher Rinsing Vinegar

I learned about the many benefits of vinegar rinse through youtuber Hover. She has oily and sensitive scalp which will produce funky scent when it starts producing oil hence she talks about hair products a lot and some of those she recommended are pretty good. So when I saw her raving about this Yves Rocher Rinsing Vinegar I didn't hesitate to get one for myself especially that this is retailed at less than RM 50 in Malaysia. I adore its claimed benefits of keeping the hair itch-free, healthy and shiny all day long and I couldn't wait to try it on mine. Let's see how it works on my dry, flaky and sensitive scalp!

Review: Leejiham LJH Tea Tree Line, The Best Skincare for Oily, Dehydrated and Acne-Prone Skin

If you guys read my article about the skincare routine of my bf who has dehydrated, oily and acne-prone skin, you will be familiar with this brand Leejiham or LJH. This is the game-changer for my bf. He has seen great improvements in his skin texture and health ever since he incorporates them into his routine. I have received a lot of emails asking about these products in details so I thought of doing a separate review on them so that you guys can have a better understanding on these awesome skin soothing and anti-acne products.

If you are unfamiliar with LJH, it is a doctor cosmetic brand in Korea that combines medicine and cosmetics in their products, kinda like Dr. Wu and Noegence. It received several awards since its establishment in 2000 and was ISO 9001 approved in 2012.

The LJH Tea Tree Line utilizes tea tree extract as its main ingredient. Tea tree is a well-known anti-acne, anti-inflammatory and anti-septic ingredient. It has been used in many skincare brands such as The Body Shop and Naruko so the ingredient should not be new to many of you. Tea tree should not be confused as green tea. It is a botanical extract obtained from Australian native plant melaleuca alternifolia instead of the stem of green tea. The most common form of tea tree exact is tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has been found in many research to have excellent anti-oxidizing, anti-bacterial and acne-reducing properties. It is as effective as benzoyl peroxide but without the associated negative effects like drying and flaking of the skin. It also can reduce the presence of harmful bacteria on the skin that might lead to acne and blemish.

But tea tree oil has one downside as well. It has really strong scent that many dislikes. Cosrx that uses only a fraction of tea tree oil in their products ended up smelling quite funky so tea tree products without the associated funky scent will be great. And this is how the LJH tea tree line kicks in. It has all the benefits of tea tree without the funky scent of tea tree oil. Most importantly, it works really well on the skin too! Let's take a look at them one-by-one!

Review: Banila Co It Radiant CC Cream SPF 30 PA++

Actually, I didn't want to write a full review on this at the first place. I planned to just include it in my yearly summary of my favourite and least favourite products without going into the details. But since 2016 has just passed, I think I will just review about it now than to wait for another 9 months. I promise you that this will be sweet and short.

Review: SU:M37 Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick

The product that we are gonna talk about today is considered a cult favourite. Almost everyone is raving about it... Soko Glam, Glow Recipe, Meejmuse and Gothamista. So I still ended up getting one although this is not something I will usually buy given its price tag. For me, a cleanser is meant to be rinsed off your face with less than a minute of skin contact so there is no point buying an expensive one, unless if it is really THAT good. Let's take a look at this cleanser to see it is indeed THAT good.

Revew: J.One Hana Cream

J.One Jelly Pack made quite a big hit in Korea when Ha Ji Woon recommended it on Get it Beauty show. As a product junkee myself, I of course went into buying one of this but ended up giving it away because I dislike its texture. I find the Jelly Pack very sticky and uncomfortable when applied on the skin. It will take forever to sink in and will stick to my hair and even attract dirt to my skin. So the J.One Jelly Pack was a failure for me.

But I didn't give up on J.One products completely. I jumped the wagon again when Ha Ji Woon came out with this capsule cream J.One Hana Cream. She claimed that this cream will be able to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on your skin. And its Nobel price winning ingredient fullerece acts as an oxygen magnet to supply moisture and nutrition to your skin. Sort of like an all-in-one anti-aging cream.

This is a swatch review.

I bought this Berrisom Oops My Lip Tint Pack from Sungai Weng a few weeks ago.

And here is my thought on it.

Review: Banila Co White Wedding CC Cushion and White Wedding Dream Cream

I am not quite a makeup person but today I want to talk about two makeup items I recently bought from Korea. I think you guys are familiar with Banila Co and its popular Clean it Zero Sherbet Cleanser as well as CC Cream. Banila Co came out with this white wedding line few months ago and I had the opportunity of buying its cushion foundation and white wedding dream cream myself. Let's look at them separately.

Comparison Review: Primary Raw Soy Milk Azulene Gel Cream vs. Soy Milk Facial Cream

Today, I want to bring your attention to two beautiful creams from Primary Raw. A lot of people call Primary Raw an art, not just a skincare, which I would beg to agree. They bring visual satisfaction in a way that you will be happy and contended just by looking at them. And they are not just beautiful, but also packed full of antioxidants, emollients and botanical extracts to deliver wholesome meals to your skin! Let's cut straight to the products!

There are two types of moisturizers from Primary Raw, namely the Soy Milk Azulene Gel Cream and the Soy Milk Facial Cream. Azulene Gel Cream is more suitable for oily and dehydrated skin whereas the Soy Milk Facial Cream works great on normal to dry skin. Both creams are made of Soy Milk, also known as DoYou in Korean. This is a highly popular ingredient in Asian cosmetics as Asian women believe that using soy products on their skin will give them tofu-like smooth and soft complexion. Of course, it is the silken tofu that I am talking about here.

I used to be a fan of Sana Soy Milk products when I was in Canada before I met Hada Labo. I was sold simply because of the soy milk product inside. So you can expect the popularity of soy milk ingredient in Asian cosmetics.

Skincare and Makeup Regrets 2016: Product Empties that I'll Not Repurchase

Choosing the worst skincare or makeup products is always a difficult thing to do. This is because personal opinions on beauty products very much depend on the user's skincare needs and moods from times to times. I need to be extra careful when calling a product obsolete or ineffective because it might be misleading for others since everyone's skin is different.

So I am very careful when it comes to choosing my top-10 or worst-10 products. Below I will include a list of my worst-10, as well as a full list of product empties that I will not repurchase in the future and why. Keep in mind that YMMV when it comes to skincare hence it is important that you patch test, research and explore further before making your final judgements. I hope that this review will be helpful for those of you who are interested in buying any of these products and please do not hesitate to drop me questions if you have any on any of the following products.

All products included in this review are product I finished using in 2016. You can check out this post for my 2015 review. For my favourite skincare and makeup products in 2016, please click here.
