Review: Yuri Pibu Artichoke Power Essence

I always thought that things will never work out between me and emulsion. Yes, emulsion, the lightweight, lotiony moisturizer that is runnier than a cream but denser than a toner.

Almost none of the emulsion I have tried come to my favourite, not even the Belif one! Innisfree Green Tea Balancing Lotion and Goodal Moisture Barrier Liquid are light enough, but they are the rare exceptions in this case.

But what I have today actually changed my thought on emulsion-type product completely! It is the Yuri Pibu Artichoke Power Essence. This little bottle is packed full of emollients and antioxidants with an emulsion-like consistency. It is so well made that I guess if all my emulsion are made this way then I would happily slather them all over my body even on my hair!

Let's take a look at the product!

Neat and pretty little thing, don't you think?

I got to know this Yuri Pibu Artichoke Power Essence through Glow Recipe, a reputable curator of everything kbeauty. Their collections are all lesser-known, lesser-spoke of but seriously awesome cosmetic brands like Huxley, LJH, Blithe, Primary Raw, Make P:rem, Whamisa and so on. They are the communicator or educator who passes the knowledge of kbeauty to the English-speaking world. And their intuition to put these products into informative and creative blog posts and videos are so mind-blowing that makes us fall into this kbeauty abyss. Hands up if you feel the same!

On their website, Glow claims that this product is formulated with 60% artichoke extract to "whip saggy pores back into shape". Sarah even raved that this is probably one of best essences the Glow team ever uses. So let's look at how good this essence is that makes her so crazy about!

If you look at the packaging, it actually looks really minimalist with a simple twisted-open dropper. It is hygienic and more convenient that way. However, thing becomes a bit more complicated when you come to the bottom of the product. When you are in your last 5ml, everything will simply get stuck inside the bottle too afraid or stubborn of coming out no matter how hard you try to shake it. In the end, I just have to accept the inevitable that I will never get to use that last 5ml.

On top of that, this product also has pretty short shelf life. It is good for 2 years from manufacturing and must be consumed within 6 months from opening. I guess that's because they didn't use any synthetic preservative hence the product must be finished within 6 months. However, the one I have is now on its 8th month from opening and has not shown any sign of deterioration.

As you can see, the product has a bouncy, soft and milky consistency that looks like emulsion. But it sinks faster into your skin without any stickiness than an emulsion. Your skin is left hydrated, nourished and silky soft. This alone, I think, is sufficient as a morning moisturizer before a sunscreen. As for the scent, this smells very much like plant resin but more pleasant than that. I am not sure does it smell like artichoke but I don't dislike the smell.

Artichoke Leaf Extract (60%), Witch Hazel Water, Glycerin, Coco-caprylate, Silica, Eclipta Prostra Extract, Sunflower Seed Oil, Zanthoxlylum Piperitum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Lichen Extract, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Beuthero Root Extract, Cathamus Tinctorius (Safflower Seed) Oil, Rose Flower Oil, Lavender Oil, Tea Tree Leaf Oil, Ceramide 3, Sodium Hyaluronate, Phytosphingosine, Yeast Polysaccharides, Cholesterol, Lecithin, Squalene, Glucoyl Ceramide, Keratin Amino Acids, Shea Butter, Tocopherol, Adenosine, Xanthan Gum, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sclerotium Gum

The ingredients are impressive. A whopping 60% of it is artichoke leaf extract packed full of potassium, protein, fiber, vitamins and magnesium. I couldn't find a lot of independent research backing the skincare benefits of this skincare. There is an on-going one by a Japanese company Ichimaru Pharcos found that artichoke possesses NF-κB inhibitory property thus is a potent ingredient in delaying aging of the skin. It is also said to have antioxidizing, wrinkles-care and pores tightening effects.

Inside this essence are also some well-known astringents and pores tightening botanical extracts. Witch hazel extract, lichen extract, lavender oil, tea tree oil and so on are great ingredients to control pores, regulate sebum production and soothe the skin. One major factor of larger pores size is clogged pores caused by pollutants and stressors. Since we cannot control the external factors, we must at least keep our skin hydrated, soothed and fed for it to work optimally.

There are also loads of emollients, healthy oils and humectants in here, all of which are skin moisturizers to keep the skin healthy and glowy. Glycerin, coco caprylate, sunflower seed oil, safflower seed oil, rose flower oil, ceramide, hyaluronic acid, phytosphingosine, cholesterol, lecithin, squalane, keratin amino acid, shea butter, adenosine and so on are some of the examples of great skin moisturizers. Some of these ingredients also possess anti-aging, wrinkles care and anti-oxidizing properties to double up the protection for the skin.

The best part about this essence is its lack of synthetic preservative. Only the natural anti-bacterial preservative phytosphingosine is present. This ingredient is also a skincare substance by its own with skin restoring, anti-inflammatory and repairing properties. It is also used in many anti-acne treatment.

In short, amazing ingredients used with a luxurious blend of anti-aging, anti-oxidizing and nourishing extracts. Really clean ingredients as well with all ingredients flagged green (safety rating on CosDNA) and only the vitamin E shown up with a score of 2 on both acne-causing and potential irritant. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant and is widely used in almost every skincare products hence I don't think it will cause any major problems for sensitive skin.

Since I cannot really read Korean, all product information I got comes from Glow Recipe website. Glow claims that this Power Essence is a skin treatment to hydrate, nourish and smooth the skin as well as to tighten the appearance of pores. Basically, an anti-aging and moisturizing milky essence.

I have a positive impression on this Power Essence. It feels really luxurious and nourishing on the skin without the burden of greasiness at all. It is surprisingly that how something so lightweight can sink so easily into the skin and moisturize it at the same time. It feels like an essence version of my beloved Blithe Tundra Chaga Pressed Serum which also has amazing texture.

But apart from that, I honestly did not see any pores tightening effect or notice any visible improvements in my skin texture. It is just a really well-made moisturizer that keeps my skin plump and soft. But like I said before, anti-aging is a life-long investment and we might only find the answer via a time machine or a microscope. Based on the ingredients used in this product and how it feels like a really well-made product, I am somewhat convinced that it will indeed bring long-term benefits for the skin with continuous use. I like how it nourishes my skin and evens out all the dry lines. And I also enjoys how its emollients make my skin glow under the light without the need for makeup.

As for whether or not I will repurchase, the answer is a definite yes. This is a pleasant, lightweight, enticing and moisturizing powerhouse that is so comforting every time I use it. At about the same price as Laneige Water Bank Essence, I like how this has added anti-aging benefits and is more moisturizing than Laneige. Laneige has its advantage too of course but I am just saying that both are now my loves. I don't think acne-prone, clogged pores should use this unless if your skin is dehydrated. It might be a little bit too nourishing and oily for those great types and it do not have enough exfoliating ingredients to unclog the pores.
