Review: Belif The True - Tincture of Chamomile

This was the first Belif product my mom bought when she walked into Belif store at Sunway Pyramid. Belif just came out with this Tincture of Chamomile at that time and the Beauty Consultant recommended it to my mom when she asked for a product that will improve blood circulation to her skin due to stress, sleep deprivation and such.

Naturally, we also grabbed some of the Belif products such as Witch Hazel toner, Hungarian Water Essence and Aqua Bomb before heading home. But this is definitely the first Belif item that we purchased from the store.

If you are curious what a Tincture of Chamomile is, it is basically an essence made of chamomile extract. However, rather than using water as the solvent, Belif goes the traditional way by having the chamomile dissolved in alcohol. This allows skin-benefiting substance otherwise insoluble in water dissolved in alcohol hence maximizing the potency of chamomile extract.

As such, despite the confusion surrounding its name, Belif Tincture of Chamomile is essentially an essence, not toner, treatment essence or serum. It is the closest to Kiehl’s Iris Extract Activating Treatment Essence, which you need to use after a toner and before a serum. I personally wouldn’t use this as the first step of my routine unless the toner I use has thicker consistency. You can also think of this like a booster or skin vitamin used to enhance the efficacy of other products.

If you observe carefully, you'll notice that this Tincture looks like those old days cough syrup. The packaging and such. Belif uses simple packaging with all its important information printed on the box and product to save cost. It also gives you a clear idea of the product content.

As you can see, about 93% of this product is chamomile tincture which is clinically found to enhance blood flow to the skin by 34.75%. Doing so, it eliminates dullness, improves vitality and enhances skin texture by 6.58%.

If you are unsure what tincture is, it is basically essence extracted using traditional Western herbal extraction that utilizes alcohol instead of water as the solvent. It will ensure substance otherwise insoluble in water is dissolved in alcohol to retain maximum skin-benefiting essences of chamomile flower. You can refer to the chart above for tincture extraction process.

Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract (86%), 1,2-Hexanediol, Glycerin, Beta-Glucan, Panthenol, Glycereth-26, Centella Asiatica Extract, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract*, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract*, Nepeta Cataria Extract*, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Leaf Extract*, Baptisia Tinctoria Root Extract*, Stellaria Media (Chickweed) Extract*, Saccharomyces/Imperata Cylindrica Root Ferment Extract, Saccharomyces/Viscum Album (Mistletoe) Ferment Extract, Lactobacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract, Alcohol, Water, Glucosyl Hesperidin, Polydatin, Niacinamide, Trisodium EDTA, PEG-8, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Alanyl Glutamine, PEG-150, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ethylhexylglycerin, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, Fragrance+, Citral, Citronnellol, Limonene, Geraniol, Linalool

Main ingredient is chamomile flower extract. Chamomile is a popular and age-old medicinal herb used since ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome to treat conditions like asthma, colic, fever, inflammation, nausea, and cancer. Its popular resembles the Chinese tonic Ginseng in Europe. A cup of chamomile tea is also found to relieve individuals off their hefty lifestyle, work stress, environmental pollutants, imbalanced diet and sleep deprivation.

As a skincare ingredient, chamomile is also great for individuals with duller, dehydrated, inelastic, and troubled skin. This is attributable to constituents such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids and glucosides inside the flower which carries antioxidizing and skin soothing benefits. It is also a skin conditioner that enhances the appearance of dehydrated or damaged skin by reducing flakiness and restoring suppleness to the skin.

Other skin benefiting extracts include oat kernel, calendula flower, catnip flower, raspberry leaf, wild indigo, cogon grass, mistletoe, centella asiatica, fermented soybean and chickweed. All these are commonly used ingredients in most Belif products with anti-inflammatory, skin conditioning, and anti-oxidizing properties. Calendula has additional sebum-controlling benefits whereas raspberry leaf extract is a vitamin and mineral rich astringent and moisturizing plant.

Also in smaller but effective quantity is glucosyl hesperidin, a flavonoid compound believed to be extracted from chamomile flower. This is a miraculous ingredient that will stimulate blood circulation to the skin, improve dark circles, brighten up skin tone and eliminate dullness. It is also an antioxidant, moisturizing and radical scavenging ingredient that prevents dryness and aging of the skin. There is also polydatin, an anti-aging and anti-oxidizing ingredient mostly present in wine here. Not to mention niacinamide, a potent anti-oxidizing, pigment-lightening, and moisture-loss preventing powerhouse.

Other ingredients are less significant although they play a good role in making up the consistency, preservation and absorbency of the product. Belif always uses quality ingredients so you can see that most of these are flagged “safe” on CosDNA despite being only “side dishes”. A vast majority of these are moisturizer, solvent, fragrance and preservatives so I don’t want to go on and elaborate on them.

Belif The True Tincture of Chamomile has a runny but slightly viscous consistency. It will leave a layer of tackiness if not applied on a damp face. I sometimes find it a little bit rich, but my oily and combination skin friends enjoy the texture very much. They find it effective at eliminating dullness, melting away blackheads and reducing redness and blemishes. As for the scent, this product has a rather strong herbal chamomile scent that I enjoy but I am not sure about others who detest fragrances in their skincare.

Apply this after your toner, and before a serum or essence. You can either use your palm to pat it on your face or using a cotton pad to swipe it along your skin texture. Swiping it with a cotton pad carries additional gentle exfoliating benefits though but patting it enhance absorption with the warm of your palm.

As shared in my Belif’s overview, Tincture of Chamomile is my mom’s holy grail. It is effective at eliminating dullness, reducing the appearance of blackheads and pores and improving vitality of the skin. It also helps to calm down and soothe her easily irritated skin and protects her from environmental and physical stressors since she travels a lot.

My best friend with extremely sensitive skin who survives mainly on Avene products enjoys this as well. She shares that this does not break her out whatsoever and helps to soothe and moisturizer her otherwise acne-prone and inflamed skin

As for me, I like to use this as a pre-essence after a toner. I don’t usually apply this as the first step of my routine but sometimes I do too if I want to skip toner. I love using this especially during times when I don’t have enough sleep and my skin looks like it is going to collapse anytime. It leaves the skin plump and bouncier with more elasticity and genki-ness. In the long run, it also reduces inflammation, redness and itchiness associated with dryness.

In short, a skin booster with noticeable skin-improving benefits for problematic skin but more of a maintenance product for healthier and younger skin. Definitely a multitasker with skin soothing, anti-acne, anti-blemishes, hydrating, and anti-oxidizing benefits. Its ability to pump more blood to the skin also enhances cellular turnover and gives a healthy and glowing complexion.
