Review: Lirikos Marine Triple Treatment

Actually, I don't really know much about Lirikos. There hasn't been a lot of information on it. Not a lot of people are talking about it as well. I learned about its existence through a Korean vlogger Liah Too, and then came across a Chinese-speaking vlogger raving about Lirikos product as the Korean's LaMer. So, I was really intrigued and ended up buying this Marine Triple Treatment.

This Marine Triple Treatment is probably one of the most beautiful treatment essences I've ever used. Most treatment essence looks gorgeous and this definitely belongs to the gorgeous-er. I started using this about 2-3 months ago when my skin was in its worst - upset by Aromatica First Serum, everything run out, and I was testing new stuffs in isolation. My constant experiments left my skin dry, sensitive and dehydrated from time and time. And this came at the time my skin needed proper hydration the most.

For those of you who are confused, this Triple Treatment means: toner + essence + treatment steps in one. It is the closest to a treatment essence. A bottle of this (140ml) can last you for about 2 months.

The texture is very watery, although not as refreshing and light as the Secretkey one, but very hydrating. It doesn't have any distinctive smell, maybe just pleasantly sour if you try to smell hard. You are meant to use this immediately after cleansing and before a moisturizer. You can of course use a toner and treatment after this if you feel like adding more nutrients into your routine. But this product is sufficient to replace your toner and essence, sort of like an essence toner. If you are using a cleansing toner, then use this after the cleansing toner.

So what makes this unique from the treatment essences?

If you look at Missha, it kinda resembles the acids and actives you see in Western skincare routine - those things that do all the gentle exfoliation and skin regeneration for you. But the opposite happens in Asian skincare. We tend to focus more on hydrating and calming our skin than allowing products to exfoliate for us. We sometimes use physical scrubs, but rarely do I hear my friend using any chemical exfoliants. It is in our core belief that the skin has its ability of regenerating and renewing by itself. All it needs is proper hydration and a base to do its job. And this hydrating essence toner supplies the energy it needs to do its self-repairing work.

green plankton; brown plankton and blue plankton

The marketing claims of this Lirikos Marine Triple Treatment is that it is a multi-essence that moisturizes, whitens and improves elasticity of the skin with its 90.93% marine triple plankton, the original vitality of life:
  • green plankton (moisture) is a self-serving plant that creates its own nutrition through photosynthesis
  • brown plankton (vitality) has excellent adaptive skills and self-regeneration abilities in extreme environments and contains omega-3, fucoxanthine and anti-aging peptides to enhance the power of the skin
  • blue plankton (anti-aging and brightening) is an anti-oxidant, capable of eliminating harmful radicals on the skin and preventing skin discolouration

INGREDIENTS

Plankton extract (90.93%), Glycerin, Niacinamide, Glycereth 26, Spirulina Platensis extract, Chlorella Minutissima extract, Saccharomyces Ferment, Sodium Hyaluronate, Beta-Glucan, Adenosine, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Water, Propanediol, Alcohol

INGREDIENTS ANALYSIS

I couldn't find a lot of scientific research discussing about the efficacy of plankton extracts in skincare, although there are articles backing the skincare and health benefits of spirulina platensis and chlorella minutissima, both of which are algaes.

Like most algae, plankton extract is a marine species that is believed to be a great source of antioxidants and has powerful moisture-binding property. It can survive under minimal conditions, even harsh ones by converting sunlight, warmth, water and minerals into nutrients for itself. It has high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids to supply moisture and protect the skin from radical damages, especially sun-related ones. It is also capable of protecting itself from UV damages, making it an interesting and exciting discovery for use in sunscreen products. Bioflavonoids and riboflavins content in here are vitamin B (the group where niacinamide belonged) that will smooth skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also has natural zinc inside to clear acne faster while soothing and protecting it from further infection and inflammation.

In addition, this essence is also packed with great complimentary ingredients like niacinamide, saccharomyces, beta glucan, adenosine, glycereth-26, hyaluronic acid and propanediol to repair and regenerate skin, improve skin elasticity, eliminate hyperpigmentation, and supply moisture to the skin. Individuals sensitive to alcohol must also be informed of the presence of alcohol here, despite only listed at the very bottom of the list, presumably to give the product a lighter consistency. I am not sensitive to alcohol and most other ingredients. Most of the time, I find myself sensitive to the formulation of a product, rather than the ingredient itself.

CONCLUSION

In short, I really enjoy the Lirikos Marine Triple Treatment. It's ultra-hydrating, yet extremely light-weighted and soothing. Once in a while, I would indulge myself in mini-facial sessions with the essence soaked in cotton pads all over my face. Then I will feel my skin is velvety soft and silky to touch.

But honestly, this essence doesn't really do much apart from hydrating. It may offer some soothing effect, or cause your pores to appear smaller if you have dehydrated skin, and will also build your base nicely for your skin to do all the regeneration and repairing work - but those takes time. I am not sure does 140ml for 50,000 won worth of a treatment essence appeal to you since it only excel in hydrating and nothing much else. Also, you can only use this for 2-3 months. But for me, it is really in my B+/A- range and will be my repurchase. I like how hydrating it is, and I like the plankton extract inside, and I also am pleased with the consistency of this product.

Next time, I'll try to compare it to Biotherm Life Plankton Essence to see if there is a major difference!
