Review: Laneige Water Sleeping Mask (2015)

Literally the first Korean sleeping mask I know, this sleeping mask is so popular that I am aware of it existence even before I start using any. Even now, it is so popular that when you google the word “Korean sleeping mask”, it will always appear in the first three rows.

Actually, I got a 20ml miniature of it from a Facebook seller 2 years ago before committing into a full size bottle. I wanted to give it a try, and was super impressed with its light-weighted hydrating properties and lovely sleep scent. It just feels so nice for someone who has never used any other Korean skincare before.

I did not buy the full bottle immediately, instead going through several other sleeping masks before getting my hand on this. You can see my mega review on sleeping mask to have a better understanding of my collection. So, it was not until July last year that I started to use it. And honestly, I was less impressed having gone through hypes of products, although I still really enjoy it and would recommend it to others.

Let’s go through this highly popular renewed Laneige Water Bank Sleeping Mask!

The packaging, presentation, design, texture and colour about this sleeping mask is wonderful. As soft and elegant as snow water are the only words I can use to describe this beautiful blue watery gel.

The texture is quite unique. It is not like gel cream where everything gets absorbed into skin to hydrate and smooth out the skin surface, or oil-based cream where an occlusive layer will form to protect the skin. It is like somewhere in between. You’ll feel that the gel is absorbing, but not sunk in or disappeared. It will form a semi-occlusive layer that is not too sticky, although a little bit tacky on your skin to constantly supply moisture thorough the night. Like, having a layer of invisible moisturizing sheet mask on your face.

This water sleeping mask claims to offer ample moisture and revitalization to skin as if it has a good night's sleep for 8 hours even after a hectic schedule.

For those who watch the popular K-drama The Descendant of the Sun, the actress Song Hye Kyo with the much-envied flawless skin reveals that this Sleeping Mask (with proper diet and exercise as well as good lifestyle of course) is her secrets to transparent and healthy complexion.

Another belief behind this whole sleeping mask trend is that our skin regenerates and repairs throughout the night. A good sleeping mask that supplies and traps in moisture thorough the skin, instead of only acting as an occlusive like most night cream does, will take this golden sleeping time to help the skin recover overnight.

It claims to have four major technologies:

  • SLEEP-TOX technology purifies and keeps skin in its optimum condition for a well-rested appearance the next morning
  • MOISTURE WRAP moisturizes and retains moisture throughout the night with the helps of dense beta-glucan moisturizing shield, hydro ion mineral water, evening primrose root extract, hunza apricot extract etc.
  • containing skin soothing agents to calm and soothe tired skin
  • SLEEPSCENT technology helps skin to relax overnight to boost its ability to regenerate

No vow factors here. No magical ingredients or impressive list to convince me that this will do any long-term goods. But, that's just the ingredients list. Nowadays, I tend to look beyond just the ingredients listed at the back of the label. Technology and formulation matters way more than just those labels.

I did not notice any sleep-tox stuffs, no clay, AHA or BHA or anything related. Maybe it is just one of those emulsifiers, surfactants and emollients that I've overlooked?

As for moisturizing and soothing agents, this has plenty. High up on the list are the very common and inexpensive butylene glycol, cyclopentasiloxane, glycerin, cyclohexasiloxane and then some "better stuffs" like hyaluronic acid, evening primrose, apricot extract, quinoa and vitamin C. All these moisturizing factors are able to moisturize and do other things like anti-oxidizing, anti-acne, nourishing, balances out skin, softens, promotes skin elasticity and stimulates cellular regeneration. The Vitamin C in here is also a stabler form of vitamin C that will even out skin complexion as well as diminish and prevent dark spots.

And of course, this has really nice sleep scent that although not generally agreed, but is heavily studied in most aromatherapeutic industry. It does aid sleep, in a pleasant way.

As I like to call it, the classical one out of all classics, this Laneige ocean-in-a-jar is definitely something to look up when you start diving into Korean skincare. Your hunt for sleeping mask will be incomplete without trying at least one.

I enjoy everything about this sleeping mask, from its packaging, marketing claims, texture to its performance. It's indeed a good sleeping mask, but not super impressive. I know a lot of people are stocking up a few or this in their wardrobe, but not me. Yes, it's really hydrating, light, gentle, smells awesome and affordable given the constant sales we have on this ever-demanding mask, but apart from that, it doesn't do anything else's for my skin. I will stay, maybe for a few months, but will not linger, if you get what I mean.

To sum everything up, this is a wonderful smelling, light-weighted hydrating gel mask that you wear throughout the night. It is definitely a must-try, but not a repurchase.
