Sheet Mask Review Episode 2: December 2015 Facial Mask Collection

Hi guys! I shared in my previous post about the importance of sheet-masking. As effective as it is as a quick skin remedy, sheet mask is definitely not something new to the Asian beauty market, but could be quite novel or even confusing for the Western society. At least, I have seen sheet masks literally everywhere in local Malaysian drugstore, but never actually in any of Canadian ones (some 3-5 years ago). I found some in TnT Supermarket in Vancouver, but that was an Asian grocery store anyway.

So, I guess it would be interesting to write about my masking experience in English, since there are enough information about sheet mask in Mandarin or even Malays already. Enough with the intro, let's cut straight to our masks today.

Here is a list of all the sheet masks I used in December 2015:

  • My Scheming Hot Spring Water Moisturizing Mask (我的心機 溫泉水活膚潤澤面膜)
  • Aritaum Sheabutter Mask
  • RegenCos 2-Step Synergy Effect Mask #Moisturizing
  • Kao SPA eye mask #camomile #rose
  • My Beauty Diary Damask Rose Mask (我的美麗日記 大馬士革玫瑰面膜) x 2
  • Freeset Donkey Milk Skin Gel Mask Pack #Aqua

My Scheming Hot Spring Water Moisturizing Mask
我的心機 溫泉水活膚潤澤面膜

This mask is made of hot spring water rich in minerals and amino acids to moisture the skin from inside out. It will also form an aqua layer to prevent the loss of water, lock in moisture, strengthen skin barrier and make skin smooth and supple. Main ingredients are hot spring water, hydrolyzed protein, and hyaluronic acid.

[Ingredients AnalysisWater, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Hydroxyethyl Ethylcellulose, Niacinamide, Chlorphenesin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Dipottasium Glycyrrhizate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Xantham Gum, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Phenoxyethanol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Arginine, Hydrolyzed Elastin, Fragrance {preservatives, active ingredients}

Packaging (90%) Scent (60%) Material (65%) Wear (40%) Ingredients (82%) Finish (88%)

My Scheming mask always has really lovely and cute packaging. Guess that's also why I bought it in the first place. This mask uses spring water, which reminds me of my beloved Innisfree Jeju Sparkling series, also the reason why I bought this instead of the orange blossom one.

This mask focuses on hydration and moisture retention, with active ingredients such as glycerin, urea, niacinamide, sodium hyaluronic acid, licorice extract, aloe vera extract, arginine and elastin to brighten up and repair skin, soothe while providing hydration and elasticity to the skin. The ingredients are pretty clean on Cosdna with some "side-dishes" flagged moderately hazardous. Those are probably ingredients with less than 1% concentration in the total formulation so I can give this a pass. In fact, I found my skin looking brightened, moisturized, bouncier when I woke up the next day. Those are the pros of the mask.

The cons are mainly factors unrelated to the performance of this mask, but may be a big turn-off for some people, such as unpleasant scent (which don't smell like anything just purely chemical kind of smell), weird sheet material (sticky, soft in the way that is close to gummy) and the wearing process (quite suffocating with that unpleasant sticky feeling while it sits on my face). Did not experience any sort of itchiness, but the entire process of having this on my face for 20 minutes was close to a torture since I don't like the smell, material, and the feel of it on my skin.

Aritaum Fresh Essence Shea Butter Mask
Aritaum 乳木果精华面膜

This mask is made of shea butter with rich nutrition to provide skin with abundant elasticity and nourishment.

[Ingredients Analysis] Water, PEG-100 Stearate, Xanthan Gum, Shea Butter, Carbomer, Adenosine, Potassium Hydroxide, Sophora Flavescens Root Extract, Honeysuckle Extract, Green Tea Extract, Peach Leaf Extract, Butylene Glycol, Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Gold, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Grapefruit Extract, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate

Packaging (76%) Scent (80%) Material (80%) Wear (80%) Ingredients (90%) Finish (88%)

Aritaum mask is, as I heard, one of the best among all affordable (USD 1-2) masks. The hyaluronic acid flavour also turns up in Get it Beauty tv show, which drives me to order a pack of 10 different flavours from a Qoo10 seller. There is no English language whatsoever on the packaging. The ingredients list are words-by-words translation by myself.

Everything is lovely about this mask, from its simple yet appealing vivid packaging, its sweet vanilla-shea butter kind of scent to its unique lotion-type essence soaked in a soft cotton cloth. I love every single second of having this on my mask. It is a nourishing treat. The essence dries up within 15 minutes or so.

This shea butter mask contains really delicious ingredients such as shea butter, adenosine, ku shen root extract, honeysuckle extract, green tea, peach leaf extract, and ginkgo biloba extract. A lot of these are antioxidants with the ability to protect skin against sun and environmental damages, anti-inflammatory agents to soothe skin, and moisturizers. Shea butter, the main extract here is an emollient with good moisturizing and anti-oxidizing properties. Ku shen root extract also possesses brightening ability which inhibits tyrosinase, a key enzyme in the formation of melanin. In addition, ginkgo can improve blood circulation to the skin to detoxify and provide radiance to the skin.

Skin feels lightly dampened and protected after using. Not sticky or overwhelming at all with a pleasant touch to the skin after. Skin looks brighter and healthier-looking the next morning.

Repurchasing? of course!

My Beauty Diary Damask Rose Mask

我的美麗日記 大馬士革玫瑰面膜

My Beauty Diary Damask Rose Mask is a highly moisturizing mask with brightening benefits. Enriched with botanical extracts such as kiwi fruit extract, aloe vera, cucumber, seaweed and so on, this mask proves itself great in penetrating deep into your skin to supply moisture with its unique Cosphingo TM x Aquaroute TM technologies. This mask is perfect for those with dull or dry skin who wants brighter and suppler skin.

[Ingredients Analysis] Water (Aqua), Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Leaf Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Triethanolamine, Phenoxyethanol, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Chlorphenesin, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Fruit Extract, Polysorbate 20, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Citric Acid, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Codium Tomentosum Extract, Fragrance, Lecithin, Polysorbate 80, Glyceryl Glucoside, Carbomer, Polyglutamic Acid, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Xantham Gum, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Lactate, Sodium PCA, Potassium Hydroxide, Glycosphingolipids, Tocopherylacetate

Packaging (80%) Scent (90%) Material (92%) Wear (95%) Ingredients (80%) Finish (85%)
This mask has really pretty appearance, from its packaging, smell to its sheet materials. It's made of this slim yet super firm wood pulp to grab essence, so there wouldn't be much left in the packet, but you'll be amazed by the amount of essence actually gets absorbed into your skin. It smells great as well, with floral rose smell that is not too overwhelming or sickening like my Aromatica Rose serum and emulsion. Had this on for 25 minutes, essence dries up pretty much within 30 minutes, which is standard in my opinion. Skin feels extra soft, plump and bouncy later. A lot of good ingredients are added such as aloe vera extract, pineapple, licorice, mountain tobacco extract, rose, cucumber and so on, with good antioxidizing and moisturizing properties to soothe, protect, moisturize skin. This mask also promises some brightening effects but is not the major claim of it - rather, it focuses more on hydration and aromatherapy.

still have many left in the box of 10 I purchase

Freeset Donkey Milk Skin Gel Mask Pack #Aqua
韩国Freeset驴奶凝胶保湿补水面膜 试用心得

This donkey milk hydrogel mask is the newest Korean beauty trend. Biochemically closest mammal milk to human milk, the donkey milk is claimed to be Cleopatra's beauty secrets. It contains rich vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, D, C, and E), albumin, fat, lactose and minerals to nourish skin and slow down the process of aging. Skin also looks brighter, more radiant and youthful after using.

This mask has lovely packaging with classy shinny look. It has some cosmetics-scented, fresh milk kind of smell, which I really enjoy. This mask comes in a hydrogel texture, quite wet when you take it out from the package. However, the essence gets absorbed really quick into your skin, like within 25 minutes it will be mostly gone. The masking experience it offers is heavenly, with no itchiness, stickiness or any other irritation. A lot of botanical extracts are being used here, such as donkey milk, honey extract, pear fruit extract, licorice root extract, fairy candle extract, he-shou-wu extract, sesame seed extract and so on and so forth. If you look at the ingredients, you will see that they are mainly for hydrating, antioxidizing, anti-inflammatory and nourishing purposes. It will also work well for those with aged skin. The mask makes my skin plump, supple and moisturized when I wake up the next morning. Not extremely impressive, but worths the hypes.

Repurchasing? I still bought a box of 10

Tsaio Ultimate Brightening Mask
上山采药 极致亮白面膜 - 樱花 x 珍珠

Tsaio Ultimate Brightening Mask contains beauty essence from sakura and pearl with moisturizing, revitalizing and brightening properties. It can improve dull skin, soothe tired skin, and contribute to a bright and radiant skin.

Butylene Glycol, Xanthan Gum, Polysorbate 20, Methylparaben, Trisodium EDTA, Water

Packaging (92%) Scent (90%) Material (86%) Wear (90%) Ingredients (98%) Finish (78%)

This mask is another Taiwanese mask that looks more like painting than mask. It's a limited edition release designed by the popular Taiwanese artist Jimmy Liao. This thing smells really lovely as well - sakura flower smell with a hint of pearl powder. The sheet material is firm but slim, somewhere between plain silk and woven cloth (凝水蚕丝隐形膜) which holds essence better than conventional wood pulp. I have this mask on for about 25 minutes and enjoy every second of the process, as if I am bathed in sakura flowers. Skin feels hydrated, moisturized with SPA-like sensation after taking off the mask, without any tackiness or stickiness. However, I fail to notice any brightening effect from this mask, maybe just a slight boost in radiance.

There are a lot of wonderful ingredients here, which mainly moisturize and brighten skin. Sakura flower extract, pearl powder, ginkgo biloba leaf extract, niacinamide, ascorbyl glucoside and licorice extract are all scientifically backed ingredients to combat hyper-pigmentation, lighten dark spots, and correct uneven skin tone. Glycerin and green tea extract are both good moisturizers to avoid the drying effects of having a lot of brightening agents here. It looks like with continued use, this mask may be able to offer its claimed effect - which is to provide ultimate brightening effect.

Repurchasing? yes!

Hanaka Botanic Treatment Reviving Mask - Camellia Hydration
花恋肌 膜法花园植萃精华面膜 - 山茶花 + 玻尿酸

This botanical treatment mask uses camellia extract that has been historically used by Asian especially Japanese women as their beauty secret. It also contains hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate skin while at the same time provide radiance. The mask is made of 100% biodegradable natural wood-pulp fiber for maximum adhesion.

[Ingredients Analysis] Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Niacinamide, Glycerin, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Methylparaben, Propylene Glycol, Propylparaben, Pvm/Ma Copolymer, 2-Phenoxyethanol, Xanthan Gum, Chlorphenesin, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Carbomer, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Phenoxyethanol, Aqua, Citric Acid, Saccharide Somerate, Sodium Citrate, Butylparaben, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Chrysanthellumindicum Extract, Ethylparaben, .Glycerin, Isobutylparaben, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Propylparaben, Triethanolamine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Peg-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Fragrance
{preservatives, unsafe ingredient}

Packaging (90%) Scent (80%) Material (85%) Wear (0%) Ingredients (0%) Finish (0%)

It's great to buy a pack of 5 since the bag is really cute and reusable. This mask smells like spring flower, with soft wood-pulp fiber to offer a soft masking experience for the skin. However, I start to experience terrible itchiness all over my face some 15 minutes later, and this itchiness lingers until I wash it off. This was the second Hanaka masks I used and the first one also gave me the same itchiness. If you observe the ingredients, you'll notice that a lot of them are preservatives and some has questionable safety of use. Honestly, I have never seen a formula with repeatedly use of preservatives, and since I have horrible sensitive reaction towards it, it's likely that my itchiness is caused by those baddies. In short, bad masking experience, would never repurchase any botanical treatment mask from this brand.

Repurchasing? No

RegenCos 2-Step Synergy Moisturizing Mask

This mask is developed by Korean cosmetic surgery hospitals for anyone who wished to achieve V-shape perfect contour. Designed with patented dual synergistic to the golden ration cut through the skin, this mask is also free of alcohol, synthentic colourants, mineral oil and harsh preservatives. It contains 2 steps, with a cotton upper mask to provide moisturizing effects to cheek and upper face areas, and a gelatinous hanging ear design mask to allow maximum absorption of highly concentrated gel type Halophyte, a powerful ingredient to regulate skin moisture balance and shape facial contours. It also contains salicornia extract, niacinamide and seaweed extract to enhance skin elasticity, firm and lift skin, soothe as well as brighten up skin.

Packaging (78%) Scent (76%) Material (84%) Wear (80%) Ingredients (N/A) Finish (76%)

This is a nice mask, but... may not worth the price. A piece of this mask costs RM 17.90 if I am not mistaken, which is about three times more expensive than normal Korean masks I can find. Talking about effectiveness, I don't find anything special or impressive about this mask. My facial contour doesn't become tighter (in an obvious way) after using 5 pieces of this mask. The upper part of this mask is quite nice I must say, with really nice cut and lotsa essence and superior moisturizing properties. But other than that, I really don't find this mask that impressive or worth the hypes. In fact, the hypes have been slowing down nowadays after people don't find it exciting anymore. As for the smell, I find this really perfumy, like the cosmetics products type of perfumy, not unpleasant but not the most earthy or herbal ones I prefer.

Repurchasing: sorry, no... for the price

December was not a masking season for me. Discount Kao eye masks, I use a total of 7 masks this month, which equals to 1-2 per weeks. Naturally, I don't experience major improvements in my skin texture, skin tone and hydration level, although my dry lines are pretty much in control.

Out of all the masks, I like My Beauty Diary Damask Rose the most, for its hydrating and aromatherapeutic effects. I also enjoy Freeset Donkey Milk as it moisturizes, smooths and pampers my skin with really pleasant cosmetic-milky (I hate sweet milky) scent. Tsaio Ultimate Brightening mask (sakura) is another great and affordable option for those who are looking for truly functional ingredients with pleasant masking experience in mask. Even the packaging of this Tsaio mask is a treat.

Masks I wouldn't make any more repurchase would be the Hanaka Botanic Treatment Reviving Mask and RegenCos 2-step synergy moisturizing mask. I also would not make any more repurchase after I finish My Scheming Hot Spring Water Moisturizing mask. I find it too unpleasant to wear despite the good ingredients and performance. I rather replace this with other moisturizing masks that are much more pleasant to have on my skin.

That's all for my masking session. I wish you all have a great masking month ahead and I hope that the information provided here may help you to figure out the perfect masks for you! Ja-na~!
